GUMS: Gum Disease - actually a bacterial infection around the teeth. Different levels of infections, that can lead to eventual tooth loss. Recent studies link gum disease with heart des ease. Starts with plaque, a sticky film constantly forming on teeth. Plaque is removable by proper brushing and flossing. Plaque not removed, becomes calcified and is termed tartar (calculus). This has to be professionally removed in a dental office. Gingivitis - initial gum inflammation. Red, swollen, bleeding gums. Reversible with professional cleaning and good home care. Mild and Moderate Periodontal - Plaque becomes tartar, pickets form around teeth, bone loss starts. Requires professional cleaning, possible root planning and scaling ('deep cleaning'). Advanced Periodontal - heavy bone loss, teeth may be mobile, requires aggressive treatment including antibiotics, possible gum surgery.
